We are a hospitalist for Baptist Hospitals. We do not provide office visits.
In certain high-risk situations, your Obstetrician may request our assistance in making appropriate decisions regarding the management and delivery of your baby.
At the request of the Obstetrician, we attend the baby's delivery because of a problem such as prematurity, fetal distress, excessive vaginal bleeding, cesarean section, etc. These conditions all place the unborn baby in a high risk situation at birth which requires our immediate specialized treatment.
Some newborns will only require simple drying and stimulation while others will require increasing levels of resuscitation. Medications and special fluids may also have to be given on an emergency basis.
We are the Primary Caregivers for babies we have seen in the delivery room and for whom we have determined that specialized care is required. Other babies are referred to us by the Pediatrician because they have either become sick or need specialized care while they are in the term nursery. Most of the infants whom we care for will be taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Some may be cared for in the Subacute Nursery.
We may be consulted by your OBGYN or Pediatrician if you or your baby has a potential problem .
If a baby in the term nursery becomes acutely ill the pediatrician or nurse will bring the baby to our attention immediately and we will provide appropriate care.
